MAY 27th SCRANTON/WB (24-23) at PAWTUCKET (24-23) 12:05 pm
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders RHP Masahiro Tanaka (0-0, 0.00) vs. Pawtucket Red Sox RHP Keith Couch (2-5, 4.53)
Sweep Apnea – The Pawtucket Red Sox and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders play the finale of their 3-game series this afternoon at 12:05 pm at McCoy Stadium. The PawSox will look to salvage the finale and avoid getting swept for only the second time this season today. Pawtucket was swept in a 3-game set at Columbus from May 8-10. Scranton/WB took the opener of this series, 2-0 on Monday night and made it two in a row over the PawSox last night, 4-3 despite a late Sox rally.
Rest Assured – Both teams have a scheduled off-day tomorrow (only the second for the PawSox since the start of the season). Pawtucket’s 6-game homestand (0-2 thus far) resumes on Friday night at 7:05 pm with the opener of a 3-game weekend series against the Louisville Bats. Pawtucket will be looking for a measure of revenge as they recently lost 3 of 4 in Louisville this past weekend.
Tanaka Time – New York Yankee ace Masahiro Tanaka will start for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this afternoon and is slated to throw approximately 65 pitches in his second rehab start for the RailRiders. He went 3 scoreless innings vs. Durham last Thursday – 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO – throwing 41 pitches (25 strikes). In 4 starts for the Yankees this season he is 2-1 with a 3.22 ERA – 22.1 IP, 14 H, 10 R, 8 ER, 7 BB, 24 SO. He last worked for New York on April 23 in Detroit (6.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R) before going on the 15-day disabled list on April 27 with tendinitis in his right wrist and a strained right forearm. More than 30 Japanese media, along with a handful of New York media types, are at McCoy today to watch Tanaka in action.
Turn the Beat Around – The PawSox have currently lost a season-high 4 games in a row overall and have dropped 5 straight home games as well. The 4-game losing skid equals their longest since another 4-gamer last August 15-18 (all at home here vs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barrre). The last time the Sox had a 5-game losing streak at McCoy prior to now came last August 5 and Aug. 15-18. The PawSox lost the final three games of their last homestand from May 15-17 (all vs. Columbus) and have fallen twice here vs. the RailRiders the last two nights. Pawtucket has not suffered a 6-game home losing streak in almost 6 years since a 7-game McCoy losing streak from July 3-17 of the 2009 season.
Red Sox/Yankees Part I at McCoy – The PawSox and RailRiders (Yankees) are facing each other 19 times this season in the newly formatted IL Schedule as the clubs will play 11 times in Moosic, PA (the teams split four of those games a month ago in Pennsylvania) and 8 times in Pawtucket (with the RailRiders grabbing the first two here at McCoy). This week marks the first of three different series between the Sox and Yanks here at McCoy. Scranton/WB will be back for a 2-game set on July 2 & 3 and another 3-game series from August 24-26.
