Revs prepare for Thursday’s SuperDraft with preseason fast approaching
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution begins 2014 preparations in earnest this week, as the 2014 MLS SuperDraft kicks off on Thursday in Philadelphia. Players will begin preseason training on Saturday, Jan. 25, at Gillette Stadium, and the team departs for its first training trip to Bradenton, Fla., on Monday, Jan. 27.
The Revolution currently has four picks in the first two rounds of the MLS SuperDraft. Rounds one and two will be held at the Philadelphia Convention Center on Thursday, Feb. 16, while rounds three and four will be held via conference call on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
The Revs’ current picks in Thursday’s SuperDraft include: No. 4, No. 12 and No. 19 – all in the first round, as well as No. 31 – the team’s lone second-round pick.
Revs acquire fourth overall pick from Columbus
The Revs announced earlier today that the club acquired the fourth overall pick in Thursday’s draft, as well as allocation money, from the Columbus Crew in exchange for the rights to defender Michael Parkhurst.
Charlie Davies deal done
The Revs announced on Thursday, Jan. 9, that forward Charlie Davies signed with the club on a free transfer from Denmark’s Randers FC as his contract with Randers FC had been dissolved by mutual consent … Davies made four substitute appearances for New England in 2013 after joining the club in early August … the forward made his New England debut on Aug. 17 against Chicago, playing 11 minutes as a second-half substitute.
Donnie Smith re-signs
Midfielder Donnie Smith re-signed with the Revs on Monday and re-joins the team for his second season in MLS … Smith made one appearance in 2013 when he started the season opener at Chicago on March 9, but he did not make another appearance the rest of the season … Smith was drafted 21st overall in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft and was a 2012 NSCAA Scholar All-American at UNC-Charlotte.
Tom Soehn added to coaching staff
Tom Soehn has been added to the New England Revolution’s coaching staff as an assistant coach … Soehn has 10 years of MLS coaching experience as both a head and assistant, including three seasons in Chicago and six seasons at D.C. United … he began his coaching career as an assistant coach with his hometown club, the Chicago Fire, where he was Bob Bradley’s first assistant in 2001 and 2002 … his most recent MLS position was director of soccer operations for Vancouver Whitecaps FC, where he also spent most of the 2011 season as the interim head coach.
