Charlotte Knights RHP Erik Johnson (4-5, 4.18) vs. Pawtucket Red Sox RHP Justin Masterson (0-1, 10.80)

Hump Day Matinee – The Pawtucket Red Sox and the Charlotte Knights play the finale of their 3-game series with another midweek matinee at McCoy Stadium this afternoon at 12:05 pm (the third straight Wednesday Noon game here at McCoy and the 4th time in 5 home Wednesday’s that the Sox have played during the day). The midweek matinees at McCoy have not been kind to the PawSox thus far as they fell to Buffalo, 8-3 on April 22; lost to Indianapolis, 6-0 on May 13; and fell to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, 9-6 on May 27 (all Wednesday home games at 12:05 pm).

Masterson Back on the Mound – Boston Red Sox RHP Justin Masterson will make another injury rehab start for the PawSox this afternoon at McCoy (his second with Pawtucket and his third overall on this rehab assignment). Justin was the starter and loser for the PawSox on May 31 at home vs. Louisville, 5-1 – 1.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO – throwing 50 pitches (30 strikes). He had his rehab transferred to Double-A Portland and started for the Sea Dogs this past Friday night in Portland vs. Bowie (no-decision in a 5-3 Portland loss) – 4.2 IP, 8 H, 2R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO – throwing 80 pitches (52 strikes).

Masterson, 30, was placed on Boston’s disabled list on May 13 with right shoulder tendinitis. He has made 7 starts for the Red Sox this season going 2-2 with a 6.37 ERA – 35.1 IP, 40 H, 25 R, 25 ER, 19 BB, 24 SO. He was 2-0 with a 4.71 ERA after a solid outing vs. New York on May 1 (2 R in 6 IP) but he lost back-to-back starts on May 6 vs. Tampa Bay and May 12 in Oakland (allowing 10 runs in 6.2 innings combined) prior to being placed on the DL. Justin was signed by the Red Sox as a free agent this past December after spending most of last season with Cleveland (4-6, 5.51 in 19 starts) before being traded to St. Louis on July 30 and going 3-3 with a 7.04 ERA in 9 games (6 starts) for the Cardinals the remainder of the year. Masterson pitched for Pawtucket briefly during the 2008 season making 3 relief appearances and 1 start (1-0, 2.89). For most of 2008 he was in Boston for his first season in the big leagues posting a 6-5 record with a 3.16 ERA in 36 games (9 starts). He has been in the Majors almost exclusively from 2008-2014 except for a 2-game injury rehab stint with Columbus last July (recovering from right knee inflammation).
