PAWTUCKET (44-71) at SCRANTON/WB (64-52) 7:05 pm
Pawtucket Red Sox RHP Matt Barnes (1-1, 4.50) vs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders RHP Kyle Davies (8-6, 3.72)
Out of the Frying Pan and Into the Fire – Things certainly don’t get any easier for the struggling Pawtucket Red Sox – who just lost all 7 games of a 7-game home and home series against the Syracuse Chiefs over the past seven days – as they now take on the 1st-place Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders for a 4-game set beginning tonight at 7:05 pm at PNC Field in Moosic, PA. One week ago the PawSox were in 5th-place and were set to face the 6th-place Syracuse for seven consecutive games (the first three in Syracuse and the last four in Pawtucket). After the 7-game stretch ended yesterday the PawSox, losers of all seven, found themselves in last-place in the division…5-games in the rear of Syracuse and a season-high -19½ GB of the front-running RailRiders.
Damn Yankees – The PawSox are 3-9 vs. Scranton/WB this season (3-4 in Moosic but 0-5 in Pawtucket). The RailRiders have won 15 of the last 18 meetings with the PawSox dating back to the final six meetings last season (all won by SWB) and continuing with the first dozen games this season. The Sox ended their 6-game losing streak vs. Scranton/WB by winning the first two games of the 2015 season-series back in April but have since dropped 9 of the last 10 meetings this year. Including tonight, the teams have 7 games remaining against each other this season – tonight through Thursday at PNC Field (all at 7:05 pm) and then in two weeks in Pawtucket for a 3-game set (August 24-26). The RailRiders have won 12 straight at McCoy Stadium – the final 7 games of 2014 and the first 5 games in Pawtucket this year.
It Hurts to Say This – The PawSox have lost 7 in a row, 10 of 12, and 18 of their last 22 games overall. They have dropped 10 of their last 11 at home and 20 of their last 24 away games. In a six-week span since June 29 the PawSox are 6-32 to go from 38-39 (3rd-place, -5 GB) to 44-71 (last-place, -19½ GB). Their season-high 19½-game deficit is their furthest since they ended the 2010 season in 4th-place and -21½ GB.
