LUCIC ON BEING EJECTED…”NOTHING WAS SAID BETWEEN ME AND THE REF…”

BOSTON BRUINS FORWARD MILAN LUCIC

On his exchange with Mike Rupp that led to the game misconduct penalty…

We exchanged words, and that was it. I think I took it a little too far, and that was it.

On if those words were just between him and the Rangers players…

Yes, it was just between me and the Rangers’ players. Nothing was said between me and the ref.

On how he felt about hi s game…

I felt great. Honestly, it was the best I felt all week since camp opened and the season started. Obviously, I was running on a lot of adrenaline coming into this game, and it’s just great to see all the guys step up and play a big game here.

On if the adrenaline pumps up more after scoring a goal…

I think it keeps going. You just want to keep maintaining it. What I think that Tuesday scrimmage was probably the best thing for us because we talked about a lot of things that we weren’t doing well, and things that kind of carried over from last season that we didn’t like. We addressed that in this week of practice, and it was good to see that we came out and played the way that we did today.

On if his instinct was to go in front of the net on the goal…

That was one of the things we talked about too, is the thing the that kind of crept out of our game, that net drive, and having that guy drive the middle and get those rebounds. Today was a lot better. Myself, and even [Daniel Paille’s] goal—two guys driving to the net and just getting those dirty goals. Those have been big for us these last couple of years.

On the fans and their response to tonight…

The fans were awesome. When we did the pre game little introductions, and all that type of stuff, it was great to see a full house. It was great to see the fans back. As a player, you couldn’t pick a better spot than to play in Boston with the fans that we have here. I personally thank them for everything that they did here tonight.

On if he wondered about the fans during the lockout…

Yeah, a little bit. It’s in the back of your mind about how they feel, and what’s really going on. It was great to see that they put everything that happened behind them. I know for myself I don’t even like talking about it anymore. It’s great to see that’s it over and done with, and they’re excited for hockey, they’re excited to see us play, and as a player and as a team, we just want to go out there and play for them, and put the best product on the ice.

On the team stability and playing within a system…

That’s also one of the things we tried to touch up on and do this week of practice is go over our systems again, and getting back to being defensively sound, and having those quick breakouts, and even being quick in the neutral zone. It was, like I said, it was great to see that everyone was fired up for this game, especially against one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference, and all of the NHL. It was good to see that we rose up the occasion.

On Lundqvist’s save that was reviewed…

I didn’t get a great view of the replay, but I talked to our video guy after. He said it looked like his whole glove went in. It’s one of those things that, it’s inconclusive, and it’s always going to be that way, it’s always going to be controversial. It was 2-1 at the time. You score right after that, but that could have been a big point of the game. We’re just fortunate enough that we were able to get one quickly after that.

On if he tipped that puck…

Yeah, I tipped it. It was a soft shot, so I got a lot more on it than I wanted to, and it ended up working. But Lundqvist made a great save, and you’ve got to give him credit. He really played well tonight.

On if he uses the reports of him being out of shape as motivation…

It is what it is. I don’t want to make too big of a deal about it. I feel good; I’m just going to go out there and play my game. You guys get to watch from upstairs, and you guys can make your own judgements and opinions about it.

On how he felt physically…

To be perfectly honest, this is the best I’ve felt all week. I was a little worried at the start of the week, especially in that Monday practice that we had here. Like I said, I go back to that Tuesday game, and just getting the kinks out, and knowing where you are on the ice again. I remember I tripped on the boards a couple of times. It’s just one of those things. As the week went on, it got better. I know it wasn’t much of a day off on Thursday, but I think that had a lot to do with it too, that I just got to sit back and get my mind off hockey on Thursday, and focus on something else. And then Friday, I had a great work day with Doug Jarvis, just working on some little things that I haven’t really worked on in a bit. I felt good, and I’m hoping to keep it up.

On if he felt it was a little sloppy early on, and then tightened up…

Everyone expected it to be like that. It will be like that for the first 5-10 games, and for us, we just want to make sure that we’re sharp. Once again, this early on in the season, when it’s starting like this, all you can really focus on is what you need to do to be successful, and that was our mindset going into today.
