BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today recalled right-handed pitcher Joe Kelly from Triple-A Pawtucket. To make room on the 25-man roster, the club optioned right-handed pitcher Heath Hembree to Pawtucket following last night’s game against the Minnesota Twins
Kelly, 28, is 2-0 with an 8.46 ERA (21 ER/22.1 IP) and 27 strikeouts in six appearances (all starts) with Boston this season. He pitched only as a reliever in his latest stint with the PawSox, allowing zero runs and five hits in 5.0 innings while recording nine strikeouts against one walk over four appearances. The right-hander has appeared in the majors only as a starter since being acquired by Boston from the St. Louis Cardinals on July 31, 2014, going 16-8 with a 5.00 ERA (121 ER/218.0 IP) in 41 outings. He has posted a 3.25 ERA (19 ER/52.2 IP) in 30 major league relief appearances, most recently pitching out of the bullpen in 2013. Selected by the Cardinals in the third round of the 2009 June Draft, the California native has made 109 appearances (79 starts) between Boston and St. Louis, combining to go 33-22 with a 4.04 ERA (217 ER/484.0 IP).
