CAMPBELL STILL OPTIMISTIC

CAMPBELL STILL OPTIMISTIC

On if it’s tough to establish momentum with so many injuries…
What can you say? Marchy [Brad Marchand] and Bergy [Patrice Bergeron] are a big part of the team, but there’s a lot of good players in the room. We’re doing our best to find chemistry with different people in different lines, things like that, and realize that when they come back we’re going to have a pretty good team. Like I said, it’s just part of the game. We’ve been very fortunate so far this year to have a fairly healthy lineup.  We’re picking up points.  We’re still winning games and we’re still gaining some ground. It hasn’t been perfect, but I don’t know if there’s really any panic.

On preventing mistakes from becoming trends…
I guess in a season like this when you’re playing so much, sometimes it’s more mentally challenging than physically challenging. And that’s when you make mistakes sometimes, when you’re tired. It’s important for us to rely on the fact that if the energy wasn’t completely there tonight, then it was a game where we had to be smart with puck management and win the game with being smart and doing smart things with the puck. Every game comes down to mistakes whether you win or lose, and usually they’re individual mistakes. That’s why there’s five guys on the ice and we try to support each other.

On potentially facing the Islanders in the playoffs…
Every team is going to be a challenge. We’ve done pretty well against them the last couple of years, but I have to say they’re playing a lot better. They seem to be playing more as a team and they have a lot of skill. Their skill is showing right now. I think we match up well against them but time will tell.

On learning to take every playoff opponent seriously after last year…
It’s a lot about matchups and who you matchup well against. Going back to what I said earlier about a new season, you look at the LA Kings, kind of stumbled into the playoffs and just big surprise how they performed. A lot of it is about timing and playing well at the right time and hitting your stride. That’s why we’re not really focusing too much on the standings. Home ice is great, but the parity in this league is such that any team has a chance to win these days.

On if he feels like he played his game…
As a team I think you can resort to games along the way. Everyone knows this team is built on a defensive game—defensive team, a checking team that can score. I think it’s about really limiting the chances against and playing from the defensive zone out. We’re giving up a lot of chances lately and I think we want to get to the point where we’re a little bit more stingy defensively, but also playing strong offensively.

On not sacrificing position for big hits…
Yeah, that’s part of it. There’s a time and a place. You want to finish your hits, but you can’t go running out of position to do it, so you kind of have to pick your spots.
