Churchhill Downs, Louisville, KY – “142nd Running of the Kentucky Derby this Weekend”
By Kristy Spinelli
The longest running sporting even in the United States is THIS weekend. The Kentucky Derby…some call it “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports”, “The Fastest Two Minutes in Sports” or best known for the blanket of roses draped over the winner, “The Run for the Roses”. This year the 142nd running is held this Saturday, May 7th in Louisville, Kentucky with a $2 million dollar guaranteed purse. Not too shabby for a 2-minute horse ride!!!
Whatever you call it, it’s also a great excuse to gather your friends, enjoy some great drinks (mint juleps and champagne), place big bets on your favorite horse(s) and show off beautiful clothes…complete with the famous, awesome and creative “big” hats!!! Another tradition, whether you really know all the words or not, is to belt out “My Old Kentucky Home” with the rest of the nearly 170,000 race fans!!! There are parties to attend all around Churchhill Downs and even locally here in Boston. Competition and prizes for best hats have been known to fetch some big prizes!!!
The Kentucky Derby is the first leg of the American Triple Crown and is followed by the Preakness Stakes and then the Belmont Stakes. The Kentucky Derby has been run every consecutive year since 1875. It is a one and a quarter mile race with “Nyquist” being made this year’s early 3-1 favorite with “Exaggerator” the second choice in a full field of 20 horses.
***NBC Sports will have live coverage of the Derby with coverage beginning at 4 pm ET on Saturday on NBC. Fans can catch all the action of the run for the roses in spectacular high definition via NBC Sports Live Extra online at NBCSports.com/LiveExtra,
